Skype for Android updated, becomes Galaxy S compatible

The Android version of the popular Skype app was first launched only a couple of months ago and now we can welcome its first major update which makes Skype for Android fully compatible with the Samsung Galaxy S devices out there and allows you to store the app on the device's SD card.
The recently updated Skype app for Android-powered devices brings along only two improvements but those are definitely worth mentioning. First off, if your smartphone or tablet is based on the Froyo, you'll be able to store the app on your microSD memory card.
As for the other novelty brought by the refreshed Skype app, the version released back on 5 October had some issues with Samsung Galaxy S smartphones but those should now be done with.
Oh, of course, there is a tiny little catch: the latest version of the Android-loving Skype will only be compatible with your Galaxy S if it's running the Android 2.2 a.k.a. Froyo (or higher).
To get the new Skype app up and running on your device, just visit skype.com/m using its web browser or check the Android Market.

LG Optimus 2X (Star) goes official, 1080p video recording confirmed

LG is such a tease - it took a few leaks and a sort-of-official announcement, but it is finally confirming some of the specs for the LG Optimus 2X - dual-core Tegra 2 at 1GHz, 1080p video recording and Froyo are a go, but some other specs are still missing.
In Tuesday, while announcing the LG Optimus Mach LU3000, LG made a veiled mention of the LG Optimus 2X (formerly rumored as Star). Now, they have issued a proper press release confirming the most exciting parts of the rumored specs.

The LG Optimus 2X will be the first Tegra2-powered GSM smartphone ever and the dual-core Cortex A9 really showed in early benchmarks. The NVIDIA SoC also enables Full HD (1080p) playback andrecording via the 8MP primary camera.
The HDMI port on the Optimus 2X can output Full HD video (unlike current phones, which top out at 720p) and with DLNA support you can play video on a compliant TV without a cable or alternatively pull video from a home DLNA server.
Other confirmed specs include a 4" WVGA screen, a secondary 1.3MP video-call camera, some 8 gigs worth of storage, a microSD card slot and a 1,500mAh battery. Here's hoping that the Tegra 2 in the LG Optimus 2X is not twice as power-hungry as single-core CPUs.

Finally, the OS has been confirmed as well - the Optimus 2X will launch with Android 2.2 Froyo and will eventually get updated to 2.3 Gingerbread. Phone dimensions, GSM bands and some other specs are yet to be announced.
The LG Optimus 2X will be launching next month in South Korea (as the LG SU660) and will be coming westward toward Asia and Europe after that (but no exact date was given). The Gingerbread update timeframe will be announced later too.

Tevez back at City training

LONDON (AFP) – Want-away Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez returned to the club's training ground on Tuesday as scheduled, Britain's Press Association reported.

Tevez was due to take part in a training session on Tuesday following a four-day break in Tenerife.

The Argentina striker sat out the weekend victory against West Ham, which emphasised City's title credentials, as he was banned.

But following the win, it was revealed Tevez had handed in a written transfer request - which has been rejected by the club.

It is understood he is unlikely to travel to Turin on Wednesday with the squad ahead of the Europa League match against Juventus.

Manager Roberto Mancini apparently made that decision before the weekend, knowing the game was a dead rubber, with City and Lech Poznan already through to the next stage of the tournament and Juventus eliminated.

City do not have a Premier League match until next Monday when they face Everton at Eastlands.

Cycling stars pay tribute as well-liked coach dies

Cycling stars pay tribute as well-liked coach dies

PARIS (AFP) – Australian Michael Rogers and Italy's Ivan Basso were among a number of top cyclists to pay tribute to Aldo Sassi after the popular Italian coach died in the early hours of Monday.

Known for his staunch anti-doping stance, Sassi's training philosophy brought much success to some of the world's top riders.

The Italian, who founded and presided over the Mapei Research Centre for Sport, announced in April he was suffering from a life-threatening brain tumour prompting brain surgery and chemotherapy.

Reports said he died in Como, Italy on Monday, aged 51.

Rogers, a stage race specialist who won three world time trials crowns earlier in his career, was one of the first to post a tribute on his Twitter microblogging site.

"RIP Aldo. Thank you for everything you gave and taught me!" said Rogers.

Sassi was notably the coach of Cadel Evans, another Australian, who finished twice runner-up in the Tour de France under his guidance.

Sasso also took Basso under his wing last year when the contrite Italian, promising to work hard to get back to his previous best, returned from a lengthy ban for doping offences.

Basso went on to win the Giro d'Italia earlier this year and is expected to be one of a handful of yellow jerseycontenders at the Tour de France in 2011.

Basso simply tweeted: "Goodbye, Aldo. Your friendship and love will always be in my heart."

In his early days Sassi was part of the support team for Francesco Moser's attempts on the world hour record in 1985.

He was then responsible for coaching leading Mapei team riders such as Johan Museeuw, Franco Ballerini, Michele Bartoli and Paolo Bettini, before founding his research centre in 2002.

Most recently Sassi tested and agreed to coach disgraced cyclist Riccardo Ricco, hitting back at critics of the Italian who served a 20-month ban for doping at the 2008 Tour de France by saying he could "guarantee" his riders were clean.

Sassi most recently put up a stout defence of the sport after claims by Italian anti-doping investigator Ettore Torri that doping was widespread in the peloton.

"Torri believes the peloton isn't (clean) but I don't agree," he said.

"That's why I'm still involved in the sport. You can ride and win a Giro (d'Italia) without having to dope."

PARIS (AFP) – Rafael Nadal and Caroline Wozniacki have been named the International Tennis Federation's World Champions for 2010.

It is the second time that Spaniard Nadal has taken the honour, while Wozniacki becomes the first Danish player to receive a senior ITF award.

American twins Bob and Mike Bryan were named men's doubles World Champions for a record seventh occasion, while Gisela Dulko ofArgentina and Flavia Pennetta of Italy become women's doubles World Champions for the first time.

Nadal became only the seventh man in history to win a career Grand Slam when he won the US Open title in September.

The 24-year-old also captured his fifth French Open title and second Wimbledon crown to regain the year-end number one ranking from Roger Federer.

With an Olympic gold medal and two Davis Cup titles to his name, the Spaniard has now won all of tennis's major prizes.

Nadal said: "It is an honour to be named ITF World Champion for the second time. After a difficult year in 2009, it was an amazing feeling to regain the No. 1 ranking and finally win the US Open.

"My goal all the time is to keep improving and be a better player each year than I was the previous year."

Wozniacki became the fourth-youngest woman after Martina Hingis, Monica Seles and Steffi Graf to earn the year-end number one ranking.

The 20-year-old was the most consistent player on the circuit, earning a tour-high six titles, in Ponte Vedra, Copenhagen, Montreal, New Haven, Tokyo and Beijing.

Wozniacki said: "What an honour it is to be named ITF World Champion. To be listed with all the former ITF World Champions is something I am really proud of. I had a great year in 2010 and I'm training hard to have an even better year in 2011."

In other ITF awards, Youth Olympic champions Juan Sebastian Gomez of Colombia and Daria Gavrilova of Russia were named as Junior World Champions, while the ITF Wheelchair World Champions are Esther Vergeer of the Netherlands and Shingo Kunieda of Japan.

The ITF World Champions will receive their awards at the annual ITF World Champions Dinner on May 31 in Paris, during Roland Garros.
